Investigation Underway Into Cause of Navajo Refinery Explosion

In oilfield operations, systems and safety protocols from the operator are critical for controlling the pressure and flow of oil, gas, and other hazardous substances. When valves fail, the consequences can be devastating.

Other factors related to valve malfunctions or misuse can cause explosions in refinery settings and are often found to be causal factors in pressure releases and resulting explosions:

  • Over-pressurization occurs when excessive pressure exceeds a valve’s design specifications, leading to rupture or explosion.
  • Corrosion and wear present another significant risk, as valves exposed to harsh chemicals or severe weather conditions can deteriorate over time without proper inspection and timely replacement.
  • Improper maintenance also plays a critical role—when servicing is inadequate or inspections are postponed, minor defects can escalate into catastrophic failures.
  • Additionally, defective or poorly designed equipment, whether due to manufacturing flaws or incorrect installation, can make valves vulnerable to failure even under standard operating conditions.

At this time, investigators have not determined whether any of these factors contributed to the explosion in Artesia, New Mexico. The review remains ongoing.

A History of Deadly Oilfield Explosions

The Permian Basin ranks among the most productive oil and gas regions in the United States—and tragically, among the most dangerous. According to data from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the region has seen over 200 worker deaths and 1,000 injuries in the past decade alone.

Workers in Midland and Andrews counties experience some of the highest rates of serious and fatal workplace accidents in Texas. These incidents frequently involve explosions, blowouts, and equipment failures that can be devastating for workers and their families.

The reality is that most of these tragedies are preventable. They occur when oil and gas companies prioritize production and profit margins over comprehensive safety measures. When corporations cut corners on equipment maintenance, safety protocols, or worker training, it’s the workers and their loved ones who bear the consequences.

At McFarlane Law, we’ve seen firsthand the devastation oilfield explosions cause, and we know how to hold oil and gas operators fully accountable. With hundreds of millions recovered for refinery explosion victims, we have the proven experience, background, and resources to take on the largest oil companies in the world and win.
